A bill has been introduced into the Florida Senate this week to allow chiropractors the ability to administer injectable nutrients. Senate Bill 1078 was introduced today by Florida senator Jeff Brandes, Republican from St. Petersburg Florida. The bill states:
An act relating to chiropractic medicine; amending s. 460.403, F.S.; authorizing chiropractic physicians who have completed specified training to administer articles of natural origin; authorizing licensed pharmacists to fill such chiropractors’ orders for articles of natural origin;
The legislation also calls for an additional 36-hour training course for chiropractors to be able to participate. The bill includes a list of substances that can be administered: vitamins, minerals, amino acids, fatty acids, hyaluronic acid, enzymes, saline, anti-oxidants, dextrose, glandulars, cellular components, extracts, water, botanicals, phytonutrients, and homeopathics, and may administer medical oxygen.
It is too soon to tell what will happen with this chiropractic scope expanding bill, the legislative session starts March 5th and lasts for 60 days. The bill has a long road ahead before passage. It first would need to make it out of the committee, where public hearings and amendments may be offered, vote on the senate floor, another in the state house and approval from the governor.
The political flames are already starting to roar among Florida's chiropractic associations. The senate bill has its origins with the Florida Chiropractic Physicians Association and is not supported by the other two state Chiropractic associations. With dueling lobbyists and competing agendas of the Florida Chiropractic Associating and Florida Chiropractic Society, the fate of this bill will be up in the air for a while.
If Florida’s Chiropractic scope of practice is expanded with this bill Chiropractors in the state would join a progressive movement in the profession working on expanding services. Numerous western states (New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, Idaho) have added expanded rights including injectables in the last few years. In Oklahoma chiropractors have had the authority to be certified to give vitamin and mineral shots to patients for over 40 years.
This is not the FCPA’s first attempt at passing a bill covering injectables for DCs. In 2001 the organization pushed similar legislation that was met with public discord from the International Chiropractors Association (ICA). The previous attempt was not successful.
For a brief time, chiropractors in Florida starting in 1985 were allowed to withdraw blood for diagnostic purposes and certified DCs could use proprietary drugs. Close to a 100 Chiropractors in Florida still have the designation on their license. Will history repeat itself or will everything stay status quo? Many Chiropractors turn their need for continuing education and advancing their professional knowledge into a chance to travel. Every year dozens of Chiropractic seminars and conventions have taken up residence for a few days in Las Vegas and even more in theme park USA Orlando offering a chance for Chiropractors to learn while on vacation.
What happens in Vegas at Parker, Prosport, Gratson and Dr. PGA stays in Vegas. Mickey, Minnie Universal, FCA National Convention, FCS, Kinesio Tape and Body Zone can all be found in Orlando this year. In 2015 look out, Tampa Florida is hosting enough Chiropractic Seminars in three months to feed all of your vacation and Chiropractic educational needs.
The FCPA Thunder in Tampa Bay Convention starts the CE season hosted by the Florida Chiropractic Physicians Association on February 21st to 22nd. An amazing 20 hours of chiro credits in more than 30 states will be offered over 2 days with 3-4 classes to choose from at a time. This advanced practice event will also include dozens of chiropractic vendors and an after party to socialize with other Chiropractic Physicians. This will be the FCPA’s first event in Tampa with previous seminars in Orlando and South Florida, not to mention Las Vegas next year.
Keep an eye out for CE Cruncher’s booth #31 at the FCPA’s Tampa Convention near the enterance. Stop by and meet our CEO Amy Tirpak, DC and receive a personalized Facebook post for your chiropractic practice. Also check out FCPA's vendor Soleve's, noninvasive targeted neurostimulation, offer of a free exam/treatment table to the first five units sold at the convention, a $2500 value.
Standard Process on April 25th 2015 offers Trekking the Hormone Jungle in Tampa at the Westshore Marriott. An interesting look at nutrition and hormone imbalances in a one day 8 hour seminar with credits applied for DACBNs. Dr. Michael Greer will cover cortisol, thyroid dysfunction, testosterone and men’s health along with understanding cholesterol. Presented by Standard Process of Central Florida with expectations that the event will sell out early.
The list continues with the politically independent Florida Chiropractic Conferences Tampa Bay event Feb 28th to March 1st and Nutri-West of Florida’s Muscle Response Testing March 7th to 8th 2015.

Wellspring Seminars is the latest provider to use CE Cruncher to attract more DCs searching for Chiropractic Continuing Education.
Wellspring Seminars provides seminars designed specifically for chiropractors. The 200 Hour Acupuncture Certification Program is a 14 month, 15 weekend medical acupuncture
seminar series, which doctors of chiropractic will find thoroughly prepares them to begin practicing acupuncture in states requiring 200 hours or less. If
your state requires less than 200 hours, we will structure the course to suit your needs. In designing this program we have included significant hands-on
practice (with all supplies included), as well as didactic instruction to accelerate learning and improve clinical results.
Instructor Bonnie L. Walker, DC, Dipl Ac earned her Doctor of Chiropractic degree from National College of Chiropractic in 1989, after attending University of Bridgeport as one of the
first graduates of their pre chiropractic program. She received her Diplomate certification in acupuncture (Dipl Ac) from the National
Commission for the Certification of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM) in 1999 and became a NC state licensed acupuncturist in 2005. She is currently
an active member of the Acupuncture Council of the North Carolina State Chiropractic Association (NCCA).
Dr. Walker is a founding faculty member of Jung Tao School of Classical Chinese Medicine. She served as biomedical dean and clinical skills instructor from 1997-2007. She was also a student of Jung Tao School from 1993-98, where she graduated from the

The London Olympics have started and the focus on international elite athletes will dominate the media. Every year the amount of colorful tape adorning the bodies of these athletes seems to grow exponentially, almost as if it is alive. The tape may not be alive but the enthusiasm in chiropractic for kinesiology taping sure is.
Kinesiology taping has progressed from a soccer player’s sprained ankle to a therapeutic resource with protocols for whiplash, shoulder strain, post-op and even torticolis. Many DCs are taking the time to learn techniques to aid their patients in sports as well as general practice.
According to the various manufacturers kinesiology taping offers: reduction in swelling and edema, improves joint mechanics and muscle function, impacts skin proprioception to reduce pain, reduces muscle spasm and fatigue, and aids reducing scar tissue and post surgical bruising.
Chiropractors at the London Olympics are covering athletes in various tapes and national colors. KT Tape Pro produced “JAM” Kinesiology Tape for the Jamaican Track and Field Team in the iconic colors of the Jamaican Flag.
Keep an eye out at the London Olympics for SpiderTech on Canadian triathlete and Olympic gold medalist Simon Whitfield. When asked about kinesiology taping he stated "Aches, pains and more serious injuries are a part of the sport. SpiderTech tape helps me manage pain and greatly improve my recovery time."
Kinesio Tape, founded by Japanese Chiropractor Dr. Kenzo Kase in 1979, took center stage at the last Olympics covering many athletes, most notably American Beach Volleyball Gold Medalist Kerri Walsh.
Dr. Kevin Jardine, Developer of Neuro-Structural Taping Technique and original creator of SpiderTech products, explains "Kinesiology tape is a crucial part of providing top level care to both world class Olympic athletes as well as your general patient base. The ability to extend the benefits of your treatment beyond the office can often make the difference in an athlete's recovery. The tape can even be worn during competition allowing the athletes to perform at their best.”

The face of Chiropractic Continuing Education is changing, master degree programs are developing at many Chiropractic Colleges. Usually a division of online and classroom hours, designed for a practicing chiropractor to expand their knowledge and practical abilities in a 2-3 year program. Logan College of Chiropractic and University of Bridgeport offer dual degree programs, offering students the ability to graduate with a DC and a Masters.
Northwestern Health Sciences University announced this week the creation of two new graduate degrees programs. The newly formed College of Graduate Health Sciences will offer a Master of Health Science in Clinical Nutrition and a Master of Health Science Clinical Chiropractic Orthopedics, for accepting students for the Winter term starting January 2013. They are fully accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. Northwestern was previously approved to offer a Master of Health Science degree in Diagnostic Imaging, which is not currently accepting applications.
The new degrees are aimed at health care providers interested in enhancing their knowledge and education in areas that can expand the services offered to patients. The curriculum consists of 40 graduate credits within three years, with 30 percent of the coursework completed online and 70 percent completed in a series of weekend seminars. The orthopedics program was developed in cooperation with the Academy of Chiropractic Orthopedists, will qualify a doctor of chiropractic as eligible to sit the orthopedic specialty board certification examination and leading to the Diplomate Academy of Chiropractic Orthopedists (DACO). Several Articles have been written in the past few months about leaked documents from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, formerly the American Dietetic Association, about their proposed political strategies for limiting market competition for its Registered Dietitian members. These articles also call into question their motives professionally and the sponsorships they receive from large food corporations (Pepsi, general Mills, Coca Cola and Kellogg).
An excerpt from the American Dieteric Assoication HOD Backgrounder House of Delegates February 2011 Market Place Relevance Regulatory and Competitive Environment of Dietetic Services
C. Other Competitors Sampled
4. Chiropractors
One of chiropractors’ most recent nutrition-related victories was in January 2010, when the New Jersey legislature radically changed chiropractors’ scope of practice from specifically denying them the authority to recommend nutritional supplements and conduct nutritional counseling to specifically permitting those tasks. In fact, chiropractic groups have long sought to solidify their professional reputation in the field of nutrition, in large part to protect the “almost 90 percent of practicing U.S. doctors of chiropractic [who] offer ‘nutritional counseling, therapy or supplementation’ to their patients.” In June 2009, the American Chiropractic Association (ACA) formally created the Chiropractic Board of Clinical Nutrition to “advance clinical nutrition while at the same time enhancing the health of chiropractic patients.”
Registered Dietitians and DTRs would be well-served to be wary of chiropractic involvement in aspects of nutrition care services, particularly the development of relationships between chiropractors and non-CDR credentialed nutrition professional organizations such as NANP. Lastly, RDs should be vigilant in noting whether a dual-credentialed chiropractor/CCN violates either a state dietetic practice act or state or federal regulations for practicing dietetics without a license and/or without the 900 hours of required supervised dietetics practice.
Any doubt that Chiropractors are on their targeted list might be persuaded by the American Dietetic Association Journal article on the Sources of Nutrition Information Among Practicing Chiropractors in the United States
