Each year, Valentine’s Week, the non-profit “Oklahaven” Children’s Chiropractic Center asks chiropractors and chiropractic students to join forces to help severely injured children by participating in the Oklahaven’s Have-A-Heart Campaign. Hundreds of chiropractors and students in the US and around the world have raised the much-needed funds for “Oklahaven” Children’s Chiropractic Center as part of their annual Have-A-Heart Campaign.
The Have-A-Heart Campaign, not only benefits “Oklahaven,” it brings awareness to chiropractic patients and the general public about the benefits of chiropractic for the children. Signing up to participate is free; it includes a fundraising kit and instructions on how to implement. Joining the campaign is simple and easy. Many chiropractic practices show the Children’s Journeys to Health video (included in the fundraising kit) in their lobby and offer fundraising hearts to purchase. Others have used the promotional materials provided to host educational events, raffles and open houses to showcase the benefits of pediatric chiropractic care.
“Oklahaven” Children’s Chiropractic Center has quietly served the children for 57 years. Pediatric patients with neurologically disorganization, nursing difficulties, developmental delays, autistic spectrum, cerebral palsy, failure to thrive and many other conditions have been successfully treated at the Center with chiropractic.
When asked why he participated in “Oklahaven’s” Have-A-Heart Campaign five-time Golden Heart Winner, Dr. Howard Berg, said, “It allows the community to see that you do contribute to something greater and that chiropractic makes a difference in children’s lives. That’s huge.”
Chiropractors that have participated in the program have stated that the Have-A-Heart Campaign creates a positive perception of chiropractic in their community and most importantly the satisfaction of helping the tiniest of patients that are most in need. Stepping up to the challenge requires interested chiropractors to fill out an online form and free fundraising packets are mailed in January. Every year “Oklahaven” strives to promote the Have-A-Heart Campaign to a larger audience through word of mouth, Chiropractic publications, organizations, digital and social media with the ultimate goal of helping more children with chiropractic.

Every day the staff of CE Cruncher scours the internet in search of the latest and greatest advances, news, products and happening in the Chiropractic Profession. Funny pictures, Chiropractic college happenings, research and of course continuing education are usually the extent of our finds. Today we came across an interesting gem while searching through the Florida Board of Chiropractic Medicine that we just had to share.
The State Archive of Florida has in their possession two striking photographs of B.J. Palmer posing shirtless. On December 1, 1955 B.J. posed for the accomplished American commercial photographer Joseph Janney Steinmetz. Both renowned men were residents of Sarasota Florida and supporters of the nearby Ringling Circus.
The description in the archive explains that the images served as a reference for an Atlanta sculptor to use while creating a bronze bust of B.J. Palmer. The Developer of Chiropractic’s likeness has been immortalized countless times in various media. The closest resemblance that we could find to the pictures are his bust in Heritage Courtyard on the Davenport campus of Palmer College of Chiropractic.
Reproduction of the images are available from the State Archive of Florida. For a glimpse into the B.J. Palmer’s history his home in home Sarasota Florida offers tours and rentals and accepts donation to support the preservation of historical property.

Cleveland Chiropractic College in Overland park Kansas, a baseball throw from the Kansas City Royals, challenged Palmer College West (located near the San Francisco Giants stadium) to a friendly World Series challenge.
Cleveland President Carl Cleveland III DC debuted a video on Facebook on October 20th, 2014 surrounded by chiropractic students sporting Kansas City Royals apparel and an abundance of enthusiasm. The Chiropractic World Series challenge is the brainchild of Cleveland Chiropractic College’s COO Jeff Karp, MBA. Mr. Karp created the event as an opportunity to engage the alumni, staff, and chiropractic students at CCC while raising funds for the Foundation for Chiropractic Progress.
Next up to bat was Palmer College of Chiropractic President Bill Meeker, D.C., M.P.H. with a response video hours later on Facebook pointing out the Giants World series wins in 2010 and 2012, then detailing the cost of living in 1985 (the last time the Royals won a world series). This solidified the chiropractic World Series challenge and unleashed the on slot of social media discourse between the chiropractic colleges.
To solidify their commitment to the challenge each side searched through their roster for a heavy hitter. Palmer West called up Greg Shepard Palmer West chiropractic student intern and former Chicago White Sox minor-league player to appear in their initial video. To cover all of their bases Cleveland posted a video from Cleveland Alumni President and Royal’s Chiropractic consultant Dr. Patrick Hammond.
The Chiropractic World Series Challenge:
?For every run the Giants score: Cleveland Alumni Association will donate $100 to Palmer West’s Student Council and Cleveland College will donate $100 to the F4CP
?For every run the Royals score: Palmer Alumni Association will donate $100 to Cleveland’s Student Council and Palmer Chiropractic College will donate $100 to the F4CP
?For each Game the Giants win: Cleveland Chiropractic College will send Palmer College of Chiropractic West a case of Kansas City Boulevard Beer and a case of Kansas City Barbeque Sauce.
?For Each Game the Royals win: Palmer West will send Cleveland College a case of fine California Wine.
This rivalry is turning into a battle of enthusiasm for baseball and chiropractic that you will not want to miss. As of the 5th game the Giants lead the World Series 3 games to 2. Palmer Alumni Association owes the Cleveland Student Chiropractic Council $1,500 and the Cleveland Alumni Association will be writing a check for at least $2,700 to the Palmer San Jose Chiropractic Student Council. The Foundation for chiropractic is already pledged a combined $4,200.
Rumors have been circulating the dugouts of each Chiropractic campus that the prevailing Chiropractic College may be graced with a hand delivery of promised local fare by the losing team’s president. Will Cleveland Chiropractic College need to purchase a few more wine glasses or will Palmer be firing up the grill for a Kansas City Style barbeque. Follow #ChiropracticWorldSeries to keep track of the fun and support of the World Series and Chiropractic.

Logan College of Chiropractic University Programs reached a settlement agreement with the National Women’s Law Center and Attorney B Lane Hasler over Chiropractic Student Brandi Kostal’s complaint of pregnancy discrimination.
While simultaneously working toward a Doctorate in Chiropractic and a Master’s in Nutrition, Brandi Kostal faced an emergency Caesarian after pregnancy complications. Following the surgery, Brandi was told to return to her Chiropractic classes, against her doctor’s recommendations, when Logan threatened that she would face attendance failures. She also requested an incomplete in order to finish her online Master’s in Nutrition course, which the Professor reported as failing grades. She was faced with postponing her Spring 2014 graduation date and enrollment in a PhD program and further tuition costs. (Read Pregnant During Chiropractic College? Complaint Filed Against Logan College of Chiropractic for a more indepth account and a copy of the complaint.)
With help of Attorney B Lane Hasler and the National Women’s Law Center, Brandi filed a complaint with the Department of Education Office of Civil Rights for, what they proclaimed, was Logan University’s disregard for her rights under Tittle XI.
Title XI, passed in 1972, is most widely known legislation for creating equal athletic opportunities, but also specifies that pregnant students have to be allowed to return to their classes, allowed to make up missed work after childbirth and not be penalized for those absences.
According to the National Women’s Law Center the settlement reached with Logan Chiropractic College / University Programs included:
- Logan agreed to adopt a policy that addresses the rights of pregnant and parenting students under Title IX
- All pregnancy-related absences will be excused for as long as medically necessary. Individualized plans will be created for making up missed work
- The University will conduct annual, mandatory trainings so that faculty members understand their Title IX obligations
- Logan’s Title IX policy will be placed on its website and in the student handbook
- Brandi's failing grades would be removed from her transcripts
- She can complete the two Nutrition Masters Courses at no cost
- Reimburse her tuition payments for the period during which she was pregnant and recovering from childbirth
When questioned about the settlement, Logan replied with a statement: "Logan University has long been a champion of equality in education. We are pleased to have resolved the disagreement with this student in a way that, we believe, will further enhance our policies and opportunities for Logan students. Our new policies and procedures will help us continue to meet evolving federal requirements."
After the settlement Logan Chiropractic College student Brandi Kostal stated "I am grateful that my fellow students who are pregnant or currently parents, will be fully protected under Logan's new policy. I know firsthand how committed pregnant students are to do well for themselves and their children. I feel confident that current and future pregnant students will be able to continue their studies as planned and build a strong future for their families."
Have you or someone you know suffered pregnancy discrimination similar to Brandi Kostal? Contact Attorney B Lane Hasler.
Editorial Note: We would like to thank Brandi Kostal for the courage and determination to stand up for her rights on behalf of Chiropractors, Chiropractic Students, present and future. While writing the original article, we heard many stories from former Chiropractic students at Logan and other Chiropractic colleges about the struggles and educational setbacks they experienced at the hands of ill-educated administrations. Good luck in your future endeavors, you are a true asset to the Chiropractic Profession.

Chiro Games headed to Cocoa Beach Florida this year on November 2nd -3rd for a weekend of athletics and fun in the sun for chiropractic student from across the US and Canada. 2013 marks the 22nd annual Chiro games with over a 1,000 chiropractic college students from 13 chiropractic colleges. Athletic events this year included: co-ed beach volleyball, 5K & 10 mile relay, co-ed softball, tennis, hockey, swimming, golf, flag football, soccer, and basketball.
Parker University’s Patriots took home the top prize with an overall score of 56 points just ahead of Life University with 52. The 3rd place title was obtained by Logan University with 42 points followed by New York Chiropractic College with 34.
Other Chiropractic Colleges represented by chiropractic student athletes included: All three Palmer College of Chiropractic campuses, Northwestern University of Health Sciences, Sherman College of Chiropractic, National University of Health Sciences, Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College, Cleveland Chiropractic College and Southern California University of Health Sciences.
Parker’s point total boost came from top finishes in men’s basketball, flag football swimming and tennis. Northwesterns’ Melissa Agnew steamed ahead to win 1st place in women’s 5k. Logan’s women’s soccer team claimed the gold defeating Parker in the championship game. With South California in their name, it is no surprise that SCUHS dominated the beach volleyball.
The massive turn out for the annual chiro games is not surprising considering the number of athletes that have decided on chiropractic as a profession. Many future chiropractors are exposed to the healthcare discipline years before while actively competing. The growing specialty of chiropractic sports
medicine has attracted many talented athletes to pursue a doctorate in chiropractic. This year’s chiro games were no exception. Leading the charge for Logan’s Llamas 1st place in soccer was Melissa Tancredi, star forward for of the Canadian 2012 Olympic bronze medal team.
Chiro games serves not only as an athletic event, but a chance to take a break from the rigors of studies, meet other future chiropractors and this year even some public service. Northwestern’s Team devised a community service project in connection with Keep Brevard Beautiful. Over 2 dozen students and faculty dedicated the Friday before the games to cleaning up the beaches.

Four Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College students biked across Canada this summer raising awareness for health living for the Unleash Your Potential campaign. This was the 5th trip for the program that started in 2005 with a mission to promote the integration of physical activity, proper nutrition, and stress management into the daily lives of Canadians.
This boisterous quartet of Canadian chiropractic students accomplished their mission with school presentation and countless media appearances on radio, television and local papers across the country. The riders( Brenna MacPhail, Matthew Missiha, Joe Sinopoli, and Kirsten Wishloff) cycled over 6,000 km from Alberta to Halifax, stopping almost every day to provide a lecture at a local school, summer camp or community group. Their inspirational educational events presented information to Canada's youth regarding healthy living, to encourage healthy habits at a young age, and in turn create a healthier generation for the future.

Macquarie University in Sydney Australia wants to transfer their Chiropractic degree programs to another university by 2015, stating they are moving towards more "research-intensive" programs. Currently the Macquarie University has over 600 students enrolled in the Bachelor of Chiropractic Science and the Chiropractic Masters programs.
Currently four universities in Australia offer degrees in Chiropractic: Macquarie, Murdoch, RMIT and Central Queensland University.
On April 24th 2013 in a press release from the Macquarie University Clive Baldock, the newly-appointed Executive Dean of Science Professor stated “… our Chiropractic area does not meet our requirements from a research-intensive perspective…”
Professor Baldock goes on to discuss wanting to focus research and teaching towards the University’s recently expanded medical school and hospital.
The Chiropractic Association of Australia (CAA) started to organize a student protest on the campus of Macquarie University over the elimination of the Chiropractic degree programs, but put a halt to it after the University promised all Chiropractic students would be allowed to finish their current degree. Last week Andrew McNamara the CAA National CEO met with Professor Bruce Dowton, the Macquarie University Vice Chancellor, to appeal for a smooth transition of both the students and staff to another institution.
On Facebook, The CAA called on Chiropractors and Chiropractic students to “Get out and amongst it. Let the University know that you’re not going to accept this!!! Use your voice! Keep Chiropractic on campus!!”
A Chiropractor heard this “call to arms” and the Community Facebook page, “Help Save the Chiropractic Degree at Macquarie University” launched last Friday and already has over 600 likes. The page is the brainchild of Macquarie University 2000 Chiropractic graduate, Fleur Castlereagh of Kirrawee Family Medical Practice. She started the page to increase awareness of Macquarie University’s decision to transfer the Chiropractic Degree program, highlight successful graduates and hopefully reverse her alma mater’s decision.
A backlash against Chiropractic has been brewing in Australia for years, fueled heavily by the Friends of Science in Medicine. According to a co-founder Professor John Dwyer of the University of New South Wales "We met with the university and suggested that a major tertiary institution should not offer these courses."
The Friends of Science in Medicine, sponsored by the Australia Skeptics, are attempting to remove CAM (Complementary and Alternative Medicine) from Universities and public health programs in Australia. The group unsuccessfully attempted to block the creation of a Chiropractic Program at Central Queensland University in 2011.
Chiropractic started at Macquarie University with the acquisition of the independent 40-year-old institution Sydney College of Chiropractic. The Chiropractic College’s courses, resources and staff converted to the Center for Chiropractic offering a Chiropractic Masters program with in the School of Biological Science at Macquarie University in 1990. The University currently offers 2 education paths: a Bachelor of Chiropractic Science followed by a Master of Chiropractic Degree in 5 years and a Graduate Diploma in Chiropractic or the Graduate Certificate in Chiropractic Science preceded by a Bachelor in Health, Medicine, or Exercise Science requiring 6 to 7 years.

Chiropractic’s introduction to India came a mere 6 years ago. Currently the country of over a billion potential patients contains only seven chiropractic clinics. To help fill the void with qualified Doctors of Chiropractic the Indian Association of Chiropractic Doctors has established a partnership with D'Youville College’s Chiropractic Program.
The
idea for the partnership came when IACD President Dr. Amit (Jimmy)
Nanda, who lives on Toronto Canada, noticed television ads for D’youville’s
Doctorate of Chiropractic program across the border in Buffalo New York. The Indian Association of Chiropractic Doctors
(IACD) intends to refer interested future Indian Chiropractors to D’Youville so
they can return home to India to open Chiropractic practices.
In
February a two-week trip has been planned to New Dehli, Mumbai and
Hyderabad India including Ron Dannecker the director international
admissions and marketing from
the D’youville College and other recruiters from the college, accompanied by members of the Indian Association of Chiropractic Doctors.
"We're going to talk to medical students and professors in
prominent positions to introduce the chiropractic profession," Dannecker
said.
The Indian
Association of Chiropractic Doctors launched in 2006 by Dr. Amit
(Jimmy) Nanda, a 2003 Life
Chiropractic College West Graduate. With the help of Dr. Ricky S. Rana also an
Indo-Canadian Chiropractor they chartered the organization with the World Federation
of Chiropractic (WFC). Their members, Canadian, American and Australian
Chiropractors of Indian descent, are currently working on national legislation
that has been submitted to the government of India for approval to regulate
Chiropractic as a profession.
D’Youville started its multidisciplinary chiropractic program in
2004 and today enrolls less than 100 Chiropractic students. The liberal arts
college’s Doctor of Chiropractic (DC) program integrates the natural and social
sciences with practice experience in a team-based setting. The four-year
professional program prepares doctors of chiropractic as primary healthcare
professionals capable of responding to the changing demands of society in an
ever-evolving, integrative healthcare system.

Logan College of Chiropractic University Programs has been awarded a Standard Process competitive research grant totaling $700,000. The recipient of the two-year grant is Cheryl Hawk, DC, PhD, CHES, CWP, FICC, Logan’s director of clinical research. Her research project is entitled “Chiropractic Care and a Specific Regimen of Nutritional Supplementation for Patients with Acute Ankle Sprain: a Multisite Randomized Controlled Trial.” This is the first research grant awarded by Standard Process Inc and was announced during the Congress of Chiropractic State Association’s gala event held in Atlanta Georgia.
The goal of the randomized placebo-controlled trial is to understand the role of nutrition in supporting chiropractic care of the musculoskeletal system. The study will compare the short- and long-term effect of chiropractic care combined with a specific nutritional supplement regimen to chiropractic care with a placebo supplement for patients with ankle sprains, in terms of improvement in physical function and pain. The trial will follow a sample patient population treated at: Logan Chiropractic Health Centers; Performance Health Care in St. Louis Mo, and Sport and Spine Rehab, Washington D.C., a group of seven chiropractic clinics.
Thirteen pre-proposals were received and seven institutions were invited to submit full proposals following Standard Process’ research grant announcement during the Association of Chiropractic Colleges and Research Agenda Conference annual meeting held this past March.
“The level of quality of proposals was very high,” said David Barnes, Ph.D., director of research and development for Standard Process. “We were excited about the research capacity of the chiropractic profession and this is our way of supporting it.” An external group of reviewers with many years of experience in clinical and outcomes research evaluated and ranked the final proposals.
In addition to Dr. Hawk, who is the principal investigator, research team coinvestigators include: Weiwen Chai, MS, PhD, director of Logan’s Nutrition and Human Performance MS program; Dennis Enix, DC, MBA, Logan associate professor; Harrison Ndetan, MSc, MPH, DrPH, associate professor at Parker University; Laney Nelson, DC, DACBSP, director of Logan’s sports and rehabilitation center; Jay Greenstein, DC, CCSP; Clint Daniels, DC, MS; and project coordinator Michelle Anderson.
“We are extremely proud of Dr. Hawk’s accomplishment is competing for and securing this major research grant. She has assembled a strong collaborative team to conduct this study,” said George A. Goodman, DC, FICC, Logan president. “Being selected for this research is a major accomplishment for Logan and builds on the strength of our study of nutrition and our Master of Science degree in Nutrition and Human Performance.”
Dr. Hawk has 35 years of experience in chiropractic and nearly 20 years in clinical research, including 26 clinical studies and more than 90 articles in peer-reviewed journals. She serves as the Chair of the Scientific Commission of the Council on Chiropractic Guidelines and Practice Parameters (CCGPP), as well as the Team Lead for non-musculoskeletal conditions, health promotion and special populations. In 2010, CCGPP named her the “Person of the Year” and The Integrator named her as one of Top 10 People in Integrative Medicine/Integrated Health Care.” In that same year, she added the Certified Wellness Practitioner certification from the National Wellness Institute to her credentials. She has been named “Researcher of the Year” by both the American Chiropractic Association (2003) and the Foundation for Chiropractic Education and Research Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES). She received her Doctor of Chiropractic degree in 1976 from the National University of Health Sciences and practiced full-time for 12 years.

Palmer Chiropractic College’s former alumni association, The Chiropractic International Chiropractic Alumni Association (TICAA), lost a court battle this month and is required to pay an estimated $1 million dollars to Palmer College of Chiropractic. The International Chiropractic Alumni Association is no longer associated with Palmer.
The battled started in 2004 when the TICCA formerly known as Palmer College of Chiropractic International Alumni Association (PCCIAA) sought a change in their position on the Boards of Trustees at Palmer. They wanted to change their ex-officio seat on the board to a full voting seat. Under the direction of Palmer Board Chair Vickie Palmer negotiations started over the seat on the board and the organizations desire only to fund the Palmer Davenport Campus. Negations broke down and the college asked for PCCIAA to no longer represent the college and turn over all funds after emails were sent criticizing the Board CEO/COO Larry Patten’s spending.
Iowa's Seventh Judicial District ruled in December of 2006 in a lawsuit brought Palmer College of Chiropractic Board of Trustees against Palmer College of Chiropractic International Alumni Association. The judge ruled in favor of PICAA regarding the funds claiming the group had not misused the funds and they would use them in the same manner as the college, to support the chiropractic college and chiropractic student scholarships.
The judge ruled in favor of Palmer College of Chiropractic “The Court thereby finds the Respondent Palmer College of Chiropractic International Alumni Association in contempt of Court in connection with its continued use of the acronym 'PCCIAA' in violation of the supplemental ruling of the Court filed on January 30, 2006." Plus PCCIAA was fined $500 for continued use of Palmer’s name.
Following the ruling Palmer College of Chiropractic International Alumni Association changed its name to The Chiropractic International Alumni Association (TCIAA) and then a few years later reincorporated to The International Chiropractic Alumni Association (TICAA) in Illinois. The current legal battle started in 2009 on behalf of Palmer College of Chiropractic and 60 DC former members of TCIAA were seeking dissolution of the organization, an accounting of the organization’s finances, and damages. Claims were made that the new corporation in Illinois left the former TCIAA a shell corporation without the consent of the membership.
Scott County Iowa District Judge Marlita Greve ruled, “for the purpose of merging the old corporation with it so that they could change their corporate domicile and avoid lawsuits, ” regarding the new TICAA in IL. She also ruled that the merger and transfer of money was improper because the membership of the organization was not given an opportunity to vote on the changes.
The court ruled that The International Chiropractic Alumni Association should be dissolved and gave them 30 days to turn over the assets that used to belong to TCIAA to Palmer. “The money should go to Palmer because it was the intended beneficiary of the funds to begin with,” Judge Greve.
Palmer College of Chiropractic Board of Trustee president Dr. Trevor Ireland stated they will use the funds for scholarships for Chiropractic students at the Davenport campus and is willing to attribute the fund raising to the organization.
TICAA is fighting the ruling. Their attorney Patrick Roby said he was filing a motion asking the judge to reconsider her decision. He declined any further comment.
According to their website The International Chiropractic Alumni Association TICAA strives to: enhance the public perception our alma mater the “Chiropractic College On the Hill”, increase the value of our Chiropractic degrees, attract more prospective students to Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport Iowa, prepare chiropractic students for future success, enhance the success of our fellow Palmer alumni, create a self-perpetuating organization.

Thursday November 15th marked an interesting day
on the campus of Life University and it just may be an historical day for the Chiropractic
profession. The guest speaker for the
student assembly was Dr. Keith Overland President of the ACA.
Why is this possibly historic? For Chiropractors educated at
institutions outside of Life or a principled chiropractic college having the
speaker of the American Chiropractic Association is unheard of. Dr. Overland
has spoken at many Chiropractic Colleges. In October he made a presentation at
National University of Health Sciences, but never Life. According to the ACA
Dr. Keith Overland was the first American Chiropractic Association President to
publicly speak at Life University.
Ask a Chiropractor that graduated from Life about going to
assemblies and they will recollect a memorable story. The entire campus comes
together throughout each semester for these assemblies. As part of the Doctorate of Chiropractic educational curriculum
these attendance required gatherings date back to the beginning of Life and the
founder Dr. Sid Williams. Legendary Principled Chiropractors Reggie Gold and
Fred Barge have previously graced the Life assembly stage motivating and inspiring
the future of chiropractic, but never arousing this much attention.
Campus was a buzz for a week before the assembly according
to students at Life. The University even sent
an email to students from President Dr. Guy Riekeman personally reminding them
to be "respectful and open to discussion". Philosophy Club and student ICA members
started a public discussion on Facebook, calling for a protest before the
assembly.
According to campus reports around 40 students
held signs and were adorned with t-shirts pronouncing their ’straight values’.
Signs included: Remove subluxation from people not Chiropractic, Drugs and
Surgery are not the Future, Keep Chiropractic in our Hands. Walking past the
crowd before entering the assembly the ACA President conversed with the
protesters professing his commitment to the Chiropractic profession.
Dr. Overland’s lecture covered numerous topics from
healthcare reform to the personal discrimination he has faced as a Doctor of
Chiropractic. He also mentioned the recent Chiro Summit meeting, discriminatory
language of the Family and Medical Leave Act, chiropractic in the VA hospitals and
the future of the Chiropractic profession. The American Chiropractic
Association President concluded his speech with a quote by hockey great Wayne
Gretzky "Skate to where the puck is going to be, not where it has
been."
Following the lecture a five students were chosen by the
administration to ask a few questions of Dr. Overland. Most of the questions
asked pertained to the ACA’s stance on chiropractors acquiring prescribing
rights and American Chiropractic Associatin’s support of the changes with the
CCE (Council for Chiropractic Education). He stated that the ACA fully supports
the CCE considering there role as the federally approved agency that accredits
chiropractic education, even though they might disagree on certain
issues. He also maintains the ACA has a drug-free position.
Rumbling on campus after the assembly rang even loader, louder
than Sid’s key hitting the floor. (Inside joke to Life Grads). Life University
the following day posted on Facebook:
ChiropracTIC looks like a cap locks problem to some, but for
many DCs it symbolizes a philosophy and mentality very different from the
principles of the American Chiropractic Association. Life University founded in
the 1970 by Chiropractor Sid Williams boasts a vitalistic mission rooted in the
original teachings of DD & BJ Palmer.
One assembly at one Chiropractic University has caused a
stir within the profession and a rare glimpse of divergent viewpoints coming
together to expand the education of future Chiropractors. In the lecture Dr. Keith
Overland, DC poignantly said "Our profession is too small to remain
divided, and that in fact there is high agreement on about 95 percent of issues
confronting us.”
CE Cruncher strives to remain neutral in the politics of
Chiropractic, serving the profession as a resource for Chiropractic Continuing Education, news and information. We
strive to communicate both sides of issues impacting all Chiropractors from an
unbiased viewpoint. Let us know what you think in the comments, but please
remain respectful.
Special thanks to future Chiropractors Gabriel Busquets and Mike Moratto for their help with this story.

Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College has teamed up with University of Ontario Institute of Technology to create the Centre for the Study of Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation. The research-focused initiative will focus on evidence-informed approaches to health-care delivery in Canada.
The Ontario Minister of Health and Long-Term Care, Honourable Deb Matthews, cut the ribbon for the inauguration for the new joint venture. She stated, “The new Centre will help Ontarians better manage their chronic conditions and disabilities.”
The UOIT-CMCC Centre for the Study of Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation will be under the direction of Pierre Côté, DC, PhD, an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Health Sciences at UOIT, who also holds appointments at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto and at CMCC. The Centre is supported by a $2.8 million grant awarded to Dr. Côté from the Financial Services Commission of Ontario to develop a Minor Injury Treatment Protocol.
“I am delighted to be part of the UOIT and CMCC partnership,” said Dr. Côté. “I look forward to working with researchers from both institutions and collaborating with them on these innovative research projects that will benefit the lives of individuals affected by chronic conditions and disabilities.”
Canadian Memorial President Dr. Jean Moss said ”CMCC is delighted by this second collaborative project with UOIT, which stands to create lasting benefits by informing health policy and demonstrating the dynamism and potential created through inter-institutional collaboration.”
UOIT and CMCC signed an articulation agreement in February 2012 that enables qualified students to complete a Bachelor of Health Sciences (Honours) in Kinesiology degree and a Doctor of Chiropractic degree in seven years, instead of eight.

Dr. Edwin Cordero's tenure as President will start Jan 1 2013 at Sherman College of Chiropractic in Spartanburg SC. Dr. Cordero will succeed Dr. Jon Schwartzbauer as the fifth president of the chiropractic college.
“I firmly believe the college has found in Dr. Cordero an outstanding leader who possesses not only vision and passion, but also an individual who has demonstrated over the years his commitment to the chiropractic profession and the vitalistic tenets upon which the profession was built,” says Peter Kevorkian, D.C., chair of the Sherman Board of Trustees
Edwin Cordero DC is a 1993 graduate of Life University’s College of Chiropractic. After graduation Dr. Cordero returned to his native Puerto Rico for a year to practice, but moved a year later to Boynton Beach FL and established Cordero Chiropractic. Professionally he has been a distinguished speaker at chiropractic associations, conferences and other organizations around the world, including Dynamic Essential. In 2011 the Florida Chiropractic Society selected him as "The Chiropractor of The Year". He has been the Team Chiropractor of the Costa Rican Central American Olympic Team for 8 years. He has also participated in numerous Chiropractic Mission Trips to Panama.
“My vision as president is to lead Sherman College in becoming the preeminent chiropractic school in the U.S. and the world, and to strengthen its cultural legacy of outstanding academics, chiropractic philosophy, excellent faculty, technique and research,” claims Dr. Edwin Cirdero.
In May the current President of Sherman College of Chiropractic Dr. Jon Schwartzbauer stated he would be stepping down after 10 years at the educational institution, 5 years as president. The Board of Trustees conducted a nationwide search and in October narrowed it down to 3 applicants: Dr. Cordero, Dr. Joe Donofrio, and Dr. Shawn Powers.
Dr. Donofrio is the current dean of clinical sciences, technique department chairmen and n associate professor at Sherman College of Chiropractic's faculty since 1997. The College stated that he will maintain his current position under the new leadership.
Dr. Powers presents for Parker Seminars, does Chiropractic Business Coaching, provides Chiropractic Seminars and is a founding member of the League of Chiropractic Women. Board President Dr. Kevorkian said the board is trying to find a way for Powers to be involved with Sherman College of Chiropractic.

The
Board of Trustees is appointing a committee to conduct a search for the next

Toronto (Sept. 5, 2012) — The U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) has awarded a major R01 research grant to the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College in support of its study of spinal manipulative therapy.
This is the largest grant CMCC has received from NIH, with over $933,665.00 invested in chiropractic clinical research. It is the third grant in the past five years that CMCC has received. The two previous grants were being funded in partnership with the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.
The research, led by CMCC faculty members Dr. Howard Vernon, Dr. John J. Triano and Dr. Tony Tibbles, aims to establish a manipulation control that will provide a baseline against which treatment outcomes may be measured.
“This approach was very valuable, because it has never been done before,” says Dr. Howard Vernon, noting that the results of this grant will help to improve the rigour of future studies by better defining and controlling variables.
“The methods of randomized clinical trials (RCTs), to date, have not been able to differentiate the specific effects of the active treatment component of spinal manipulation from the non-specific effects such as doctor-patient interactions,”
says CMCC Dean of Research and Graduate Education Dr. John J. Triano.
“By combining modern laboratory instrumentation in the form of force sensing table technology with clinical research methods and treatment procedures, the investigators at CMCC have engineered a way to fill this gap.”
“We are thankful for the support of NIH, which reaffirms CMCC’s international reputation for leadership in spinal research,” says CMCC President Dr. Jean Moss. “By enhancing understanding of the specific effects of active
treatment, this research has the potential to demonstrate the benefits of chiropractic care for a variety of conditions and, ultimately, to inform the care we provide to our patients.”
