Dr. Samantha P. Adams was a groundbreaking woman in chiropractic and her community. A graduate of the Chiropractic Institute of New York (1944-1968), she was the first African-American woman licensed as a chiropractor by the Ohio State Medical Board.
Samantha Adams opened her practice in 1950 in her hometown of Toledo, retiring in the 1970’s. She chose chiropractic as a profession after a Woodville Chiropractor that helped her sister.
A determined woman, she didn’t let her small frame, 5 feet, 3 inches tall and weighed about 120, keep her from adjusting any patient.
"She was strong," her daughter said. "With adjustments, it's all in the leverage and the pivoting, and she knew how to do that. She enjoyed helping people get better without filling them up with a lot of medication."
Her vast accomplishments included:
First woman to serve as president of the Toledo branch of the NAACP in 1971
First African American woman elected to the Toledo Board of Education in 1977, later became president
First African American woman elected in Lucas County
Named a “Legend” by the African American Legacy Project in 2003
Awarded a Toledo Glass key to the City by former Toledo Mayor Carty Finkbeiner in 2009
Dr. Samantha Adams died Tuesday on her 86th birthday. The family had stated that she had not recovered from a recent stroke.
She is survived by three daughters Dr. Karen Adams-Ferguson, an obstetrician-gynecologist and Cecelia Adams and Denise Adams Onyia, both former Toledo Public School administrators; son, James Lawrn Adams; sister, Glacie Reed; six grandchildren, and a great-grandson.
