A recent study published in the Journal Chiropractic & Manipulative Therapies found American Chiropractors initially recognized a Life Threatening Condition (LTC) in one of their patients on average of once every 2.5 years of practice.
Researchers from Texas Chiropractic College and Parker University surveyed 2,000 randomly selected chiropractors from a list of over 55,000 from the US. 29.9% self reported to the survey that contained questions about the LTC that they were the first to recognize over the course of their years of professional practice.
The Chiropractors in the study had collectively 11442 years in practice, mostly male, in practice over 15 years and included 3861 patients with a reported previously undiagnosed LTC.
The study revealed the most commonly presenting conditions were in order: carcinoma, abdominal aneurysm, deep vein thrombosis, stroke, myocardial infarction, subdural hematoma and a large group of other diagnoses. They claimed the intent of the study was to show that an increased awareness and emphasis on recognition of these conditions is a critical part of the chiropractic profession and chiropractic education.
